A lack of in-house skills is the most common challenge builders and construction businesses face when trying to promote themselves online, according to a recent industry survey.

A poll conducted by digital marketing agency Koozai found that 44% of construction professionals believe their businesses lack the necessary skills to implement an effective digital marketing strategy. Additionally, 33% cited a lack of time as a major obstacle, while 17% pointed to budget constraints. Surprisingly, only 6% said senior decision-makers were resistant to investing in digital marketing.

As online searches for building and construction goods and services continue to rise, businesses that fail to adopt digital marketing risk being left behind. The latest Office of National Statistics (ONS) data reveals that online sales in the construction sector have grown by £1.6 billion over the past decade. However, building and construction businesses are still lagging in e-commerce adoption, with just 5.5% making online sales compared to 28.6% of UK businesses overall.

Why Digital Marketing Matters in Construction

“For decades, builders and construction businesses have relied on traditional marketing practices and face-to-face relationships. While these remain essential, online demand has grown significantly,” says Hayley, Director at HD Coms. “Without a strong digital marketing strategy, builders and construction firms risk falling behind as buyers and industry professionals shift their purchasing habits online.”

With the building and construction industry evolving, digital marketing is no longer optional—it’s a necessity. Companies that embrace it will have a competitive edge, reaching new clients, generating leads, and positioning themselves as thought leaders in their field.
